Hi my name is Denise Hardy and I love everything in connection with the home i.e. Interior Design, Hand Painting Furniture, Decorative Painting Techniques and Art.

I live in Alicante, Spain with my husband in a beautiful villa which we both love and work hard on making it our home.  I have been established in creating beautiful homes since 1998 and never get tired of doing what I do.

Small Chest Painted in Rustoleum Metallic Paint

This piece of furniture was given to me by a friend, which she found 'free to take' from a neighbour's house.  It was not in good condition, but she thought I would be able to do something with it.

It's made with veneer wood and parts of the veneer was coming off and damaged. So I did not intend to actually paint it all over.  So... I repaired what was damaged and I knew I wasn't going to get a totally flat surface good enough to paint.
Therefore, I decided to use some Textured Wallpaper, which also never cost me anything as I was given this too.  All it cost me was just for the paint.

I had not used either textured wallpaper or metallic paint before, so I thought I would give these a trial to see what it came out like - after all I had nothing to loose apart from a small amount of paint!

First of all, after tidying up the veneer, I used Zinsser Bin 123 primer - as the wood was brown. I put two coats of this on all over.  Then I used 2 coats of Rustoleum Metallic Effect paint in Silver.  I did not put this on the top of the chest as there was no need when I knew I was going to use the wallpaper.

After I completed painting on the metallic paint, I then let it dry overnight and the next day placed the wallpaper on the top of the chest, using Mod Podge both on the top of the chest and the underneath of the wallpaper and then painted on top of that with the Metallic paint.  I also let this dry overnight.  The next day I put two coats of Mod Podge on top of the wallpaper to protect it.  I already had in my 'stash' some glass knobs, so I re-placed these on the drawers and lined the drawers with a different wallpaper.

TIP:  When your cutting the wallpaper, cut it about an inch all round larger than the item you are putting it on.  Then, once you have placed the paper on your item, then use a sandpaper block and sand on the edge of the item going across the 'crease line' and you will end up with a perfect finished edge.

I took some photos thinking that this piece was completed.  But, after about a couple of hours and looking at the chest - I decided it needed a 'little something' extra.  Do you ever do that?

So.... I decided to also use the textured wallpaper on the drawers and paint it in a Metallic, but a different colour, this was Liberon Metallic Glaze in 'Forja', which is a black - you will see below the difference in the 'all-over' metallic silver and then some photos of the 'changed' colour of the drawers.  What would you prefer? All over Silver or the Silver and the black glazed drawers?

Whoops! you will see below that I nearly forgot to take the 'Before' pictures, I had already started to prime it.  That can be a problem because when you get a piece of furniture in front of you - all you want to do is to get started.
